
Swimming begins as a balance problem.
In The Invisible Tightrope I argued that imbalance in water does not make you fall. It appears as effort.
You can be losing balance with every stroke without realizing it. You simply become less efficient, less rhythmic, and more fatigued than you should.
Before you add force, you must learn to travel through the water on a stable line.
But distance swimmers eventually hit a practical problem: balance alone is not enough.
A stroke that looks controlled in the pool can fall apart in open water. Fatigue, chop, sighting, contact, and anxiety expose anything too delicate or over-controlled.
To build a stroke that travels, you need one that can survive contact with reality.
That requires a practical synthesis of several coaching models, organized into a clear hierarchy:
Support: Create a stable line.
Grip: Catch and hold the water.
Rhythm: Keep the stroke moving.
Robustness: Survive pressure and fatigue.
Here is how I think we can borrow the best from each major influence to build a working stroke of our own.
1. Support: the anchor
Swim Mastery
Swim Mastery builds on earlier balance-first ideas with a stronger focus on how the stroke holds together. It is particularly useful for learning how to hold your shape in the water.
What to borrow: The concept of the anchor.
Instead of thinking about pulling the water, establish pressure against it and imagine moving your body past the hand. This creates the structural support needed for everything that follows.
What to avoid: Static perfection.
Do not over-fixate on your position. If you become too monastic about alignment, you risk losing the flow required for distance swimming.
The rule: Use the anchor to find your line.
If you cannot establish effective pressure against the water, fitness ends up paying for technical leakage.
2. Grip: the bite
Effortless Swimming
Effortless Swimming provides the bridge between holding a line and generating speed. It helps swimmers see what an effective catch and pull actually look like.
What to borrow: The visual shapes of the catch and pull.
Aim for a high-elbow relationship that brings more of the forearm into play and directs pressure backward. The elbow does not need to sit close to the surface, and the exact shape must respect your shoulder mobility.
The objective is not to reproduce a textbook photograph. It is to create useful pressure against the water.
What to avoid: Chasing a perfect catch if it breaks your timing.
A beautiful shape is useless if it creates a hitch or pause in the stroke.
The rule: Refine the bite.
Look for the sensation of holding the water rather than slipping through it.
3. Rhythm: continuity
Swim Smooth
Swim Smooth is especially useful for addressing the dead spot in the stroke and understanding how different swimming styles can succeed.
What to borrow: The continuous stroke.
In open water, the problem is not a long stroke. It is a long pause.
A dead spot allows momentum to stall and the body to lose support before the next stroke takes over. Maintaining a steady stroke rate creates dynamic stability. Movement itself helps you stay organized.
What to avoid: Rushing.
Do not mistake a higher stroke rate for better rhythm. If you spin your arms without support or grip, you will simply fatigue faster.
The rule: Once support is in place, use rhythm to keep the stroke moving forward.
Be long, but be continuous.
Is CSS (Critical Swim Speed) training also a skill sweet spot?
There may be another reason CSS-based training works particularly well for developing swimmers.
CSS is normally treated as a physiological marker. But for a developing swimmer, I am not convinced physiology is always the most interesting thing happening at that pace. There is simply too much noise from technique, pacing, breathing, balance, and economy.
I suspect CSS, and perhaps particularly the range just below it, may also sit close to a skill sweet spot.
Swim too slowly and the stroke can become artificial. There is plenty of time to place everything carefully, but the movement may no longer resemble the stroke you need when pace matters.
Swim too fast and the opposite happens. Effort starts to overwhelm organization, and the swimmer tends to fall back on whatever movement pattern is strong enough to survive.
Around CSS, there may be a useful middle ground. You are swimming fast enough that support, grip, and rhythm genuinely have to work together, but slowly enough that you can still organize and change the movement.
For the developing swimmer, perhaps CSS is not mainly a physiological sweet spot.
It may also be a skill sweet spot.
4. Robustness: functional pragmatism
Trisutto
Trisutto coaching provides a necessary reality check. It focuses on the version of your stroke that still works when you are exhausted.
What to borrow: Functional simplicity.
For some swimmers, a straighter-arm recovery or a slightly shorter stroke is the more durable option under pressure.
A durable stroke beats a pretty one that fails after 400 meters.
What to avoid: Using “functional” as an excuse for technical chaos.
The goal is a stroke that is robust, not reckless.
The rule: Technique must survive contact with reality.
Stress-test your stroke when you are tired and see what remains.
The Swimmer’s Toolkit
These tools can help isolate the sensations within the working stroke.
The snorkel
Helps with: Isolating posture and head position at the start of the stroke.
When to use it: When you want to focus on alignment without the distraction of breathing.
Warning: Stop if you find yourself over-fixating on static positions.
Small finger paddles
Help with: Heightening your feel for the water during the catch.
When to use them: When you want to sharpen the direction and pressure of your grip.
Warning: If they make you muscle the pull or cause shoulder strain, they are defeating the purpose.
The Tempo Trainer
Helps with: Making stroke rate consistent.
When to use it: When the stroke becomes too patient, develops a pause, or loses consistency under fatigue.
Warning: The goal is continuity, not rushing.
The pull buoy and band
Help with: Restricting the kick so you can test rhythm and body connection through the stroke.
When to use them: As a stress test for timing and connection.
Warning: Use them to test the system, not as a permanent crutch.
The Working Stroke Diagnostic
The hierarchy of support, grip, rhythm, and robustness applies at every level, but the primary limiter changes as you get faster.
These profiles refer to CSS, a repeatable pool pace representing sustainable swimming. They do not refer to a one-off 100-meter effort or the pace recorded during a long open-water event.
They are coaching reference points rather than fixed categories. Pace alone cannot diagnose a stroke, but it can provide useful clues about where the current weak link may lie.
2:00/100m CSS: Stability under load
The question is whether you can maintain a stable line as the duration builds.
At this level, small losses of balance, often around the breath, may cause the legs to drop or the stroke to lose connection. The swimmer can keep moving, but at a high energy cost.
Success looks like: Your body position and rhythm remain dependable across longer repeats. Fatigue increases the effort, but it does not fundamentally reorganize the stroke.
1:45/100m CSS: Organization
The question is whether you can hold a stable line and keep the stroke together once breathing, fatigue, or open-water stress enter the system.
At this level, support is often the first limiter.
Success looks like: You can hold the line under pressure, and the stroke starts to travel rather than merely survive.
1:35/100m CSS: Connection
The question is connection.
You already have a functional stroke shape, but are support, grip, and rhythm linked into one continuous action?
At this level, the stroke often looks competent but still leaks energy between phases.
Success looks like: You become more economical at pace. The stroke feels less interrupted and more connected.
1:25/100m CSS: Precision under pressure
The question is whether the stroke remains precise as the demand rises.
The stroke is already functional and connected, but can you maintain your grip and timing when pace rises and conditions deteriorate?
At this level, robustness becomes the real test.
Success looks like: You maintain technical quality when swimming hard. The stroke remains effective as pace and fatigue increase.
At one end, the swimmer is learning to stop fighting the water.
In the middle, the task is to connect the stroke.
At the fast end, the challenge is to preserve precision under pressure.
The Wetsuit Factor
For many recreational swimmers, the wetsuit is a significant factor.
Because it provides meaningful buoyancy to the hips and legs, it reduces the balance burden rather than solving it completely.
The suit gives you more support, but you still need to turn that support into clean forward movement without becoming sloppy in your alignment.
Bottom Line
A good distance stroke is not the prettiest stroke.
It is the one that still works when the water, the pace, and your own fatigue try to pull it apart.
That was also one of the lessons of UltraSwim. The stroke does not have to be spectacular. It has to be repeatable.
Balance gives you the platform.
Grip gives you propulsion.
Rhythm keeps you moving.
Robustness allows you to do it again, and again, and again.
The working stroke is not the stroke you can produce for one perfect length.
It is the stroke you can still recognize several hours later.
