When we think of balance sports, we usually think of skiing, skating, surfing, gymnastics, or walking a tightrope. In all of them, balance is obvious. Move your center of mass too far past the point of support and the mistake is immediate: you fall. Gravity gives you brutally clear feedback.
Water is different.
In swimming, imbalance shows up as effort rather than a fall. You can be losing balance every second without ever quite realizing it. You do not crash into the ground or topple visibly; you just become less efficient, less rhythmic, and more fatigued than you should be.
In water, you can be constantly falling without even knowing it.
For me, it is increasingly clear that we should redefine swimming, especially for adult learners, as a balance sport!

The swimmer who could not make 25 meters
I was recently watching a beginner swimmer. He could not manage 25 meters without stopping. The obvious question was not whether he lacked effort or intent, but what was actually breaking down in the water.
His true limiter was balance.
Every stroke was a rescue action. Every breath disrupted him. His legs were not kicking to drive him forwards; they were kicking to stop the rest of the body from collapsing. He was not so much swimming as fighting a series of tiny balance losses.
This is one of the great hidden truths of swimming. Beginners often think they are limited by fitness and movement patterns when they are actually limited by instability. They do not lack an engine, or even a propeller; they lack a platform. And without that platform, the engine cannot express itself.
Why swimming hides the problem
On land, balance errors are obvious. On skis, if your pressure goes the wrong way, the ski tells you. On skates, if you lose alignment, you know about it instantly. A slackline does not negotiate: you either organize yourself over it or you come off.
In water, the feedback is much murkier.
You can be slightly too deep at the front, slightly disconnected through the trunk, slightly mistimed in your rotation, slightly late on the breath, or slightly tense in the neck. None of these errors looks dramatic in isolation, but together they create a body that is never really settled.
The swimmer feels this as effort. The coach often sees it as struggle and provides technical feedback. But the deeper issue is often that the swimmer has not yet learned how to balance in the water.
My own route into swimming
I came to swimming quite late. I was in my forties when I took on the challenge of learning freestyle properly. I did have some background in the water as a pre-teen, but I was never a competitive swimmer. In fact, breaststroke and butterfly were always my favorites; I never quite felt at home in the long-axis rhythm of freestyle.
My first sporting love was alpine skiing, where I worked as an instructor and race coach. Looking back, I suspect that this is part of what drew me into swimming later. There was something familiar in the challenge: performance depends on how well you organize the body around a moving line of balance.
In skiing, you feel this most clearly when you are stacked cleanly over the outside ski in a turn. When that line is right, the ski runs and grips; it feels almost self-supporting. When it is wrong, everything becomes a rescue: you brace, twist, rush, and fight for control. Swimming has the same underlying logic, but with softer feedback. When the line is right, the water supports you. When it is wrong, every stroke becomes a correction.
In skiing, that line is easier to feel because gravity is such a direct teacher. In swimming, the line is invisible. But it is still there.
The old stroke-rate war and what got lost
Around the time I was learning freestyle, there was a fairly sharp debate in swimming circles. On one side sat Total Immersion, a system that placed heavy emphasis on streamlining and balance. On the other side were coaches who felt this approach underplayed the importance of stroke rate.
They were arguing, in essence, over a very simple equation:
Speed = stroke rate × distance per stroke
You cannot ignore stroke rate. A swimmer who glides beautifully but turns the arms too slowly will not go very fast. There is a point where long and smooth simply becomes underpowered.
But looking back, I think something important got lost in that argument. The real contribution of systems like Total Immersion was not that they solved the whole equation; it was that they gave adult learners a progression of skills rooted in balance and body control. They recognized something that many traditional coaching environments missed: a struggling adult swimmer does not always need more force or more fitness. Often, they need a better relationship with the water.
For the learner, that was the deeper lesson. Before stroke rate becomes a weapon, the body has to find a line it can actually hold. They need to learn how not to fall through it.
This matters because efficiency is not a luxury reserved for naturally fast swimmers. It is what makes distance swimming more enjoyable, less taxing, and more sustainable.
The recreational swim boom changes the question
The growth of the recreational swim movement makes this even more relevant. Events like UltraSwim 33.3 have shown that distance swimming is now accessible to many people without a traditional competitive background. This is a brilliant development.
But it also raises a new question: once swimmers discover that they can complete the distance, how do they move better through it?
Many recreational swimmers settle into a constant, effortful rhythm, as if fluency belongs only to those who started young. They begin to think of themselves as people who can get through the distance, not people who can move well through the water. I do not think that is true.
I think many of them are far closer to enjoyable, effective swimming than they realize.
The problem is that the usual answer is often just more meters. But more meters performed with poor balance usually just grooves the same struggle deeper. The swimmer learns to survive the water rather than move well through it.
Better balance changes the experience completely. When balance improves, the water stops feeling like something to battle. The swimmer feels less frantic, less interrupted, and more fluid. There is more rhythm, more ease, and usually more speed as a byproduct.
The recreational swim movement has already proved that distance is accessible. The next step is proving that good movement is accessible too.
Why copying the greats can be the wrong place to start
One of the traps for adult learners is that they watch elite swimmers and copy the visible features of speed: turn-over, commitment, and rhythm.
What they do not see is the hidden balance that makes all of that possible.
Elite swimmers are fast because they have balance so deeply embedded that it disappears from view. Their breathing does not derail them. Their rotation does not throw them off line. Their stroke can be aggressive because the underlying structure is stable.
Beginners often reverse this logic. They try to become balanced by imitating the appearance of power. Usually, that makes them worse. They pull harder, but pull from a poor position. They spin faster, but with more instability.
Before speed can really work, balance has to reduce the cost of movement.
What balance really means in swimming
When I say swimming is a balance sport, I do not mean balance in a vague or mystical sense. I mean very specific things.
In practice, it looks like this:
The head is not fighting the hips.
The breath does not collapse the line.
Rotation is controlled rather than excessive or absent.
The lead arm can hold shape without panic.
The body can travel forwards without each stroke becoming a small survival event.
This is why so many adult swimmers improve dramatically when they stop chasing effort and start chasing stability. They are not becoming less athletic; they are becoming more mechanically coherent.
The invisible tightrope
For adult learners especially, freestyle is not just a propulsion problem. It is a balancing act performed on a line you cannot see and cannot stand on.
The process is often frustrating, but that only makes the moment it clicks more satisfying. Once balance improves, everything else starts to make sense. Breathing gets easier. Stroke timing settles. Effort starts to translate into speed instead of splashing and heart rate. Every movement, from the depth of the kick to the timing of the breath, begins to work with the water instead of against it.
A length of the pool that once felt like a crisis begins to feel smooth. Not effortless, but supported. Not easy, but organized.
I am increasingly convinced that adult learners can become very competent swimmers by starting with balance rather than power. First build stability, then let force sit on top of it.
Bottom line
Swimming is not only a fitness sport. It is also a balance sport. For skilled swimmers, that balance is hidden inside rhythm and speed. For beginners, it is often the whole game.
Many adults think they need a bigger engine. Often, what they really need is a more stable vessel. They do not need more struggle layered on top of instability. They need a body position, a breath, and a rhythm that the water can support.
Learn to balance in the water, and suddenly fitness has somewhere to go. So before you ask how hard you can pull or how many meters you need to swim, ask a more fundamental question:
Can you hold the line?
If you can, speed has something to build on. If you cannot, more effort may only deepen the struggle.
Master the invisible tightrope first. Then add force.
